The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is undoubtedly the biggest mixed martial arts promotion company. It’s based in Las Vegas and features the top-ranked fighters in the world. The first tournament was held in 1993. The UFC has grown in popularity over the years and expanded after merging with Pride FC, and purchasing WEC and Strikeforce. The early days saw fighters from various martial arts competing against each other with their own styles. Over time this evolved into synergy of the different arts into what MMA is today. The UFC is broadcasted worldwide and is available on mainstream media, subscription networks, pay-per-view, and on mobile devices.
Bellator MMA was created 2008 and is a massive MMA promotor. Bellator features the, “Toughest Tournament in Sports” in which four or eight fighters compete against each other in an elimination tournament for a $100 000 prize. There is a huge following for Bellator and the quality fights it produces. It’s available to watch in over 140 countries, and is available on Spike in the US. The organization is based in Santa Monica, California, and owned by Viacom.
Another Global player in the MMA scene is One Championship. One was started fairly recently in 2011 by multimillionaire Chatri Sityodtong and ESPN Star Sports senior executive Vicor Cui. One Championship is broadcasted to over one billion homes in 118 countries, so one can see how big of a player this organization has already become. One is broadcasted through Fox Sports Asia, and has events throughout Asia.
As MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world, there are other organizations starting and continuing to grow in popularity worldwide. Exciting fighters can be shown to the world and there truly has been a revolution of sorts through the growth of MMA. Superstars like Conor McGregor and many before him have helped to elevate MMA into one of the most exciting sports to watch live or on screen.
