UFC 237 will be held on Sunday, May 12th at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Originally, the event was expected to be held at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba; however, the event was relocated to Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, after the UFC failed to come to terms with Athletico Paranaense. The main event will be a fight between Rose “Thug” Namajunas and Jessica “Bate Estaca” Andrade for the Woman Straw Weight Title. Fans expect to see fireworks in this one. Rose is really unorthodox when it comes to her standup and movement in general and her grappling is on a world-class level. Her opponent Jessica Andrade is a really aggressive fighter with ferocious striking and knockout power. On top of that, she has numerous victories via submission, which makes her dangerous wherever this fight goes.
Additionally, this card is stacked with legendary fighters and there are a lot of interesting matchups on it. Let’s start off with a first fight on the preliminary card between a true hero of MMA B.J. Penn and Clay “The Carpenter” Guida. Many critics and fighters think that this fight shouldn’t take place because Penn is way past his prime and he doesn’t have “Yoel Romero type genetics” to take shots and endure high pace at the age of 40. Even though Guida is a couple of years from turning 40 himself, he was always known for his aggressive style and endless cardio. In spite of odds being against the former multi-division UFC champion, maybe he’ll have a couple of aces up his sleeves.
The other interesting bout is one between Antônio Rogério Nogueira and Ryan “Superman” Spann. Nogueira is a true veteran with great boxing and a black belt in BJJ. He has had countless battles and the 42 year old carries endless experience going into this bought. His opponent is a much younger fighter who will try to push the pace and make Nogueira tire out. Ryan also has a nasty guillotine choke and if possible will try and take it to the ground.
There is also quite an interesting fight between the one and only Anderson “The Spider” Silva and Jared “The Killa Gorilla” Cannonier who is a dangerous and experienced power puncher. Anderson is also in his 40s, but his recent fight with Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya proved to everyone that his reflexes are still sharp and he can execute his counters with pinpoint accuracy. “The Spider” has a really good chance of making it a “Fight of the Night”.
Also, a former king of the Featherweight Division José Aldo will meet a heavy puncher Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski who has 11 out of his 19 victories coming by a way of KO or TKO. MMA analysts expect a scrap between these two and this one will most likely not go the full distance. Aldo has excellent muay-thai and it will be interesting to see whether his brutal leg kicks and body shots can stop Volkanovski from getting the W.
